Lumberyard-Yardman / Driver Job Summary: The Yardman/Driver will be engaged in loading, unloading, storing, transferring, and distributing materials such as lumber, millwork, sheet rock, insulation, and various other building materials in yard. The Yardman/Driver will be responsible for delivering materials to drive sites, inspecting and maintaining trucks, and being a positive representation of the company while traveling.

Key Responsibilities:
General

  • Work with Dispatch or store manager to keep up with the flow of the day, to keep the loads pulled and ready to be put on the trucks as they come back for their next runs.
  • Maintain control over and help walk-in or pick-up retail customers and business to business customers.
  • Receive and pull orders and credit returns with accuracy.
  • Load and unload trucks, bunking materials correctly.
  • Ability to recognize customer satisfaction and dissatisfaction with materials being loaded and resolving customer problems.
  • Be able to perform general organization and housekeeping/landscaping of the yard.
  • Be able to use power tools and saws safely, make rough cuts.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to other store personnel, managers, and customers.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to follow procedures and make them more efficient.
  • Work well independently and in a team environment.

Inventory

  • Verifies that incoming materials are inspected, checked for damage, and counted for accuracy.
  • Monitor inventory levels to ensure the proper stock of materials is maintained, coordinate with and keep Buyer up to date on what materials need to be purchased.
  • Complete physical up to date inventory of stock merchandise in a regular cycle basis and year-end counts.
  • Count and check the quality, quantity, and condition of all incoming and outgoing products.
  • Ensure incoming and outgoing deliveries are consistent with purchase orders in quantity and quality prior to accepting delivery or unloading products off trucks or prior to loading trucks to go out for delivery.
  • Report shortages and material issues to manager.

Safety and Efficiency:

  • Maintain and keep the yard safe for customers and employees by following guidelines to make sure forklifts/trucks are maintained and make use of all provided safety equipment.
  • Responsible for organized, safe and proper storage of all inventory.
  • Responsible for the proper unloading of vendor trucks as well as the safe and orderly storage of products received, such as whether or not windows, doors…etc needs to be hand unloaded or loaded or use forklift to unload or load plywood and lumber.
  • Suggest changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency.
  • Ensure the safe and orderly receipt, storage, and delivery of all special items as appropriate.
  • Comply with the safety and environmental programs, including DOT, OSHA, EPA and state and city ordinance requirements consistent with storage, handling, and transport of materials.

Other Requirements:

  • Building materials knowledge.
  • Ability to read and use measuring materials.
  • Strong time-management skills.
  • Have an understanding of basic math.
  • Ability to pass a background check, drug test, MVR, and DOT physical.
  • Valid Driver’s License, able to drive flatbed, CDL preferred.
  • Forklift experience, forklift certified will take preference.
  • Able to lift up to 75lbs frequently, in a consistently safe manner.
  • May have to help in the other two yards as necessary.

Customer Service / Counter Sales Associate Job Summary: The Customer Service / Counter Sales Associate will be engaged in helping walk in customers with questions, finding products and fulfilling orders; answering and transferring phones; and process store inventory. Help in the yard when necessary with un/loading and maintenance. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic and want to continue learning about the building industry and products.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

General

  • If necessary, assist customers with loading their vehicles
  • Receive materials and coordinate returns as necessary
  • Ability to read and understand invoices, packing slips, shipping, and receiving orders
  • Strong communication skills is required in order to coordinate with team members
  • Computer skills and general office equipment experience is necessary
  • Sales of building materials, windows, doors, mill work to contractors and home owners
  • General administrative/clerical work, such as creating and processing inventory transfers and purchase orders, scanning, filing…etc.
  • Work with Yardmen, Dispatch, or Store Manager to keep up with the flow of the day
  • Acknowledge and maintain control over and help walk-in retail customers and business to business customers
  • Be able to perform general organization and housekeeping of the store
  • Ability to follow procedures and make them more efficient
  • Work well independently and in a team environment
  • Answer the phones in a timely manner in a friendly, professional voice

Inventory

Service Counter and Sales Support

Job Summary: The Dispatcher will coordinate the transportation of our building materials orders to customer homes and contractor job sites. Strong communication skills are imperative in this position as it will relay information between management and yard personnel to our customers in a professional manner. This position will speak with customers, handle orders and transactions, check material in, receive it, and process invoice for payments.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

General

  • Maintain control over and help walk-in retail customers and business to business customers
  • Educating and providing customer service to walk-in retail customers
  • Ability to follow procedures and make them more efficient
  • Work well independently and in a team environment
  • Receive incoming calls in professional and courteous manner
  • Handling transactions

Dispatching

  • Manage and create delivery schedules
  • Schedule and dispatch drivers to appropriate locations according to schedules, customer requests, or immediate needs.
  • Supply drivers with necessary information, documents, etc…
  • Relay information such as work orders or other messages to and from store personnel to drivers and customers as necessary
  • Coordinate drivers to ensure all deliveries are complete and on time
  • Create shipping and dispatch documents
  • Provide drivers with loading, unloading, and load assembly paperwork, in a timely fashion
  • Keep and organize orders, customer requests, dispatching documents
  • Applies knowledge of service areas to dispatch sufficient trucks to ensure delivery schedules are met
  • Notifies customers when their orders and special orders have arrived and are ready for pick up, or when to expect delivery of items, as appropriate.
  • Works directly with store manager, suppliers, customers, and freight carriers to resolve issues, problems, and order discrepancy issues in a professional and timely manner
  • Communicates effectively with management, sales, drivers, and customers regarding orders particularly on any issues with deliveries
  • Check in material and receive it into inventory

Other

  • Monitor operations to ensure that staff members comply with administrative policies and procedures, safety rules, and government regulations
  • Assist yard personnel with loading and unloading trucks when necessary
  • Schedule PM and required repairs to forklifts, trucks, and other equipment
  • Adhere to safety regulations and comply with state and federal transportation regulations, procedures, and laws
  • Provide assistance, support, and crisis management for drivers
  • Knowledge or interest in learning about the FMCSA and DOT regulations
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records to include monitoring drivers’ daily logs for accuracy or any violations
  • Reviews documentation submitted by drivers each day to ensure post-trip inspections are properly completed
  • Manage vehicle fleet, including repair and maintenance logs and documentation
  • Assist with managing Driver Safety Program
